Shopify Protect vs Signifyd vs Riskified (Deep Comparison 2026) TL;DR: Shopify Protect wins on cost (free) and simplicity, but only for Shopify Payments orders and only on covered fraud types. Signifyd wins for mid-market ($1M-$50M) with the best balance of approval rate and price. Riskified wins for enterprise ($50M+) but is overkill below that. Below is the side-by-side on every dimension that matters.
Disclosure: Unholdr is independent. We don’t sell these tools, take affiliate revenue, or get paid to
recommend them. We see hundreds of Shopify stores per year through our hold-and-suspension
recovery work. This review is based on what our 200+ clients actually run.
These three tools all do “guaranteed” or “near-guaranteed” fraud protection, but they sit at different points on
the cost-vs-coverage curve. Picking wrong costs money in two directions — either overpaying for coverage you
don’t need, or underpaying and eating chargebacks that should’ve been blocked.

How each one actually works
Shopify Protect
You toggle it on inside Shopify Payments. Eligible orders get a “Protected” tag. If a covered order results in a
fraud chargeback, Shopify reimburses you the order value automatically — no representment, no dispute filing.
The catch: “eligible” and “covered” are Shopify’s call, post-hoc.
The model is opaque. Shopify doesn’t tell you up front which orders will be covered — they decide when the
dispute happens. In practice, most US-Shopify-Payments orders that look “clean” get covered. International
orders, high-risk verticals (CBD, vape, supplements), and orders flagged by Shopify’s risk algorithms often don’t.
Signifyd
You install the app or API integration. Every order at checkout gets sent to Signifyd’s machine learning model,
which scores it in <1 second using their cross-merchant transaction graph (billions of transactions across
thousands of merchants). The model returns “Approve” or “Decline.”
Approved orders are guaranteed — if any of them results in a fraud chargeback or INR claim, Signifyd
reimburses the full order value plus any chargeback fees. Declined orders, you can still manually approve, but
you lose the guarantee on those.
Riskified
Same fundamental model as Signifyd — cross-merchant graph, machine learning score, guarantee on
approvals. But built for enterprise: custom risk models per merchant, dedicated account team, integration with
backend systems beyond just Shopify, and often paired with Riskified’s chargeback recovery (representment)
service for the disputes that slip through.
The enterprise difference is mostly operational. Riskified’s account team will custom-tune rules for your vertical,
your AOV, your regions, and rebalance every quarter.
Approval rate — the dimension that matters most
Approval rate is the percentage of legitimate customer orders that get green-lit instead of declined. Even a 5%
improvement on a $10M store is $500K of recovered revenue.
TOOL TYPICAL APPROVAL RATE LIFT VS. NATIVE SHOPIFY RULES
Shopify Protect +1-3% (Shopify’s own rules + protection layer)
Signifyd +5-15% (cross-merchant data graph effect)
Riskified +10-20% at enterprise scale
The lift is biggest at the edges — international orders, high-AOV transactions, customers using fresh email
addresses or new payment methods. Stores with mostly US, mid-AOV, repeat customers see less lift because
there’s less to recover.
Cost — the dimension everyone fixates on
ANNUAL GMV SHOPIFY PROTECT SIGNIFYD (~1%) RISKIFIED
$500K $0 ~$5,000 N/A (no enterprise contract)
$2M $0 ~$20,000 N/A
$10M $0 ~$100,000 ~$120K negotiated
$50M $0 ~$500,000 ~$400-500K negotiated
But raw cost is misleading. What matters is net cost after recovered approval rate and avoided
chargebacks. A $20K/year Signifyd contract that lifts approval rate 8% on a $2M store recovers $160K in
otherwise-declined revenue. The cost is 12.5% of the recovered revenue — a strong ROI.
For Shopify Protect, the cost is zero but the coverage is partial. You may still eat 30-50% of fraud chargebacks
that don’t qualify.
Coverage scope — what each tool actually protects
DISPUTE REASON SHOPIFY PROTECT SIGNIFYD RISKIFIED
Stolen card (true fraud) Yes, eligible orders Yes Yes
Item not received (INR) No Yes Yes
Friendly fraud No Partial Partial
Account takeover Partial Yes Yes
Subscription rebill disputes No Add-on Yes, native
Promo abuse No Add-on Yes, native
Reshipping fraud Partial Yes Yes
This is where Shopify Protect’s “free” looks less free. INR claims are a massive category of disputes — easily 30-
50% of all chargebacks for many stores. Shopify Protect doesn’t cover them.
Region and multi-gateway
GATEWAY / REGION SHOPIFY PROTECT SIGNIFYD RISKIFIED
Shopify Payments Yes Yes Yes
PayPal No Yes Yes
Klarna No Partial Yes
Stripe (direct) No Yes Yes
Amazon Pay No Yes Yes
EU SEPA / local methods No Yes Yes
LATAM gateways No Partial Yes
APAC gateways No Partial Yes
If you sell through more than one gateway — almost everyone past $1M — Shopify Protect leaves big gaps.
Multi-gateway coverage is where the paid tools earn their keep.

What none of them fix
None of these tools fix a Shopify Payments hold or suspension once it’s been issued. Once Shopify’s Merchant
Trust team has flagged your store, the question of “which fraud app you use” is irrelevant — the decision lives
upstream of any app. Fraud prevention is a leading indicator that keeps you out of trouble. None of it is a cure
once trouble lands.
The merchants who recover fastest from holds layer fraud prevention with a direct escalation path. Tool to
lower risk + relationship to resolve flagged risk. You need both.
Which one should I pick if…
…I’m under $500K/year? Shopify Protect only. Don’t pay for guaranteed protection yet.
…I’m $500K-$1M with growing chargebacks? Shopify Protect + add NoFraud (not covered in this 3-
way but a cheaper Signifyd alternative).
…I’m $1M-$10M, mid-market? Signifyd. Best $/coverage on the market.
…I’m $10M-$50M, multi-region? Signifyd. Stay until volume justifies Riskified procurement.
…I’m Shopify Plus, $50M+? Run a Signifyd vs Riskified bake-off. The winner is whoever quotes better
approval lift on YOUR data.
…I sell mostly internationally? Skip Shopify Protect, go Signifyd minimum.
…I’m in a high-risk vertical (CBD, vape, supplements)? Signifyd or Riskified. Shopify Protect coverage
gets murky here.
…I already have a Shopify Payments hold? None of these will help. You need direct escalation. Apply at
Frequently asked questions
Can I run more than one of these at the same time?
Shopify Protect + Signifyd or Shopify Protect + Riskified — yes, and many stores do. You get Shopify Protect’s
free baseline on Shopify Payments orders plus the upgraded coverage from the paid tool. Signifyd + Riskified
together is uncommon and usually duplicative — pick one.
Does Shopify Protect actually pay out reliably?
For straightforward fraud chargebacks on eligible orders, yes. For edge cases — international orders, INR
claims, anything in a high-risk MCC — coverage is inconsistent. Stores routinely report 70-90% payout rates on
submitted claims, with the rejected ones falling into “not eligible” buckets that weren’t transparent upfront.
How do Signifyd and Riskified handle false declines?
Both let you manually review and approve declined orders. The trade-off: any order you manually approve
loses the guarantee. Most stores accept this and review a small percentage of declines per week.
Will any of these prevent Shopify from flagging my store for review?
Indirectly. A lower chargeback rate is the single biggest factor keeping you out of Merchant Trust’s queue. But
Shopify also flags on volume spikes, dropshipping signals, product category, and customer complaint volume
— none of which a fraud app touches.
Is Signifyd worth it if I’m already running Shopify Protect?
Yes, past ~$1M. Shopify Protect covers a slice; Signifyd covers everything else, including INR, multi-gateway,
and the international orders Shopify Protect ignores. Run both in parallel.
What if I’m in the EU and worried about chargebacks under SCA?
SCA (Strong Customer Authentication) reduces fraud chargebacks because the bank has authenticated the
cardholder. But SCA exemptions, recurring transactions, and merchant-initiated transactions still leave gaps.
Signifyd and Riskified both account for SCA in their EU risk models. Shopify Protect’s EU coverage is less
mature.
