Best Fraud Prevention Apps for Shopify in 2026 (Honest Review) TL;DR: For most stores, Shopify Protect is the best starting point because it’s free and covers chargebacks directly. Larger stores doing $1M+ should layer Signifyd or NoFraud on top. Riskified is enterprise-only. FraudLabs Pro is the budget pick. Below is the side-by-side breakdown — pricing, dispute coverage, regions, and where each tool actually wins.
Disclosure: Unholdr is independent. We don’t sell these tools, we don’t take affiliate revenue from
them, and we don’t get paid to recommend them. We recommend based on what our 200+ merchant
clients actually use — and what they switched away from.
We see hundreds of Shopify stores every year. Some get hit with a fraud wave, get their chargeback rate spike
above 0.65%, and trigger a Shopify Payments hold or suspension. The fraud prevention tool a merchant was
running before the wave usually determines whether the damage stayed at 1.2% or got contained at 0.4%.
This guide is the breakdown we wish merchants had read before the wave hit — not after.

The five tools, reviewed
1. Shopify Protect
What it is: Built directly into Shopify Payments. When enabled, eligible orders get chargeback protection —
Shopify reimburses you for fraudulent disputes that fall under their criteria.
What it’s good at: - It’s free. Zero cost to enable. - Decision is instant and invisible to the customer. -
Reimbursement happens automatically — no dispute filing on your end. - It’s the only tool with native Shopify-
data depth (every signal, every order, every refund pattern).
What it’s not good at: - Only protects against fraud chargebacks (reason code 10.4 / 4837 territory) — not
“item not received,” “not as described,” or service-related disputes. - Coverage criteria are opaque. Some orders
get covered, some don’t, and Shopify decides post-hoc. - US-centric. International coverage is improving but
inconsistent. - Doesn’t help you with non-Shopify-Payments orders (PayPal, Klarna, etc.).
Verdict: If you’re on Shopify Payments and you haven’t enabled it, enable it today. It costs nothing. Even at
imperfect coverage, free protection beats no protection. But don’t assume it’s enough on its own once you’re
past $1M in volume.
2. Signifyd
What it is: The market leader for mid-market and enterprise fraud prevention. Machine learning model on top
of a massive cross-merchant transaction graph. Issues a “guaranteed approval” on each order — if it
greenlights a transaction and that transaction becomes a fraud chargeback, Signifyd pays the chargeback
amount plus fees.
What it’s good at: - True financial guarantee. Money back, not just “we tried.” - Best-in-class approval rates in
the mid-market segment. Stores typically see false-decline rates drop 40-70% vs. native Shopify rules. - Strong
on international orders, BNPL, account takeover detection. - Handles INR (item not received) claims, not just
stolen-card.
What it’s not good at: - Pricing is opaque and negotiated. Expect 0.5-1.5% of order value for the guaranteed
tier — meaningful margin hit on low-AOV stores. - Integration is more involved than a 1-click app — expect a
sales call before a contract. - Overkill for stores under $500K. The fixed cost of integration vs. the actual
chargeback exposure doesn’t pencil out.
Verdict: The default mid-market pick. If you’re doing $1M-$50M and chargebacks are a real line item, Signifyd
usually pays for itself within 90 days.
3. NoFraud
What it is: Direct competitor to Signifyd, positioned slightly downmarket. Guaranteed chargeback protection
with per-order pricing instead of pure % of GMV.
What it’s good at: - Per-order pricing is friendly for high-AOV stores (a $1,000 AOV jewelry store pays the
same $0.49-$1.50 as a $50 AOV t-shirt store). - Clean 1-click Shopify integration. Much faster to deploy than
Signifyd. - Strong manual review team for borderline cases. - Solid customer support — actual humans, fast
responses.
What it’s not good at: - Smaller data graph than Signifyd, so approval rates can lag on edge cases
(international, high-risk verticals). - Less effective on subscription / recurring fraud than Signifyd. - Region
support is narrower (US, Canada, UK, EU primarily).
Verdict: Best fit for $500K-$10M stores that want guaranteed protection without enterprise procurement.
Especially good for high-AOV verticals where per-order pricing wins.
4. Riskified
What it is: Enterprise fraud prevention. Same guaranteed model as Signifyd but built for $50M+ retailers with
custom integrations.
What it’s good at: - Highest approval rates in the market on enterprise volume. - Sophisticated chargeback
recovery and dispute response built in. - Can model unique vertical risk (luxury, electronics, marketplaces). -
Strong partnerships with payment processors — sometimes negotiates better processor terms alongside the
contract.
What it’s not good at: - Not for SMBs. Minimum contracts are in the six figures annually. - Long sales cycle.
Implementation can take 60-90 days. - Pricing is fully bespoke — no transparency until you’re in procurement.
Verdict: If you’re enterprise ($50M+ Shopify Plus), Riskified is on the shortlist. If you’re not, ignore it.
5. FraudLabs Pro
What it is: Budget fraud-scoring app. Doesn’t guarantee anything — it just scores orders and lets you set rules
to flag, hold, or block.
What it’s good at: - Free tier covers small stores (500 queries/month). - Paid tiers $30-$400/month — far
cheaper than guaranteed services. - Highly configurable rule engine. - No long-term contract.
What it’s not good at: - No financial guarantee. If you approve a bad order, the chargeback is yours. -
Requires you to actively configure and maintain rules. - False-decline rate is higher than ML-driven competitors
— you’ll lose more legitimate orders.
Verdict: Reasonable starting point for stores under $500K that can’t justify guaranteed protection. Once
chargebacks start eating real money, graduate to NoFraud or Signifyd.
Where these tools fall short
Even the best fraud prevention tool won’t save you if Shopify’s Merchant Trust team has already flagged your
store. Once a hold or suspension lands, no app on your dashboard fixes it — the decision lives inside Shopify
Risk Operations, not on your store’s settings page.
The merchants who recover fastest treat fraud prevention as the front line, and a direct escalation path as the
second line. You need both.

Which one should I pick if…
…I’m just getting started, under $200K/year? Shopify Protect (free) + FraudLabs Pro free tier. Don’t pay
for guaranteed protection yet.
…I’m $200K-$1M and chargebacks are climbing? Shopify Protect + NoFraud. Best $/coverage ratio.
…I’m $1M-$10M with steady chargeback pressure? NoFraud or Signifyd. Run a 30-day side-by-side
trial.
…I’m $10M-$50M, multi-region, complex? Signifyd. Their data graph wins at this scale.
…I’m Shopify Plus, $50M+? Riskified or Signifyd Enterprise.
…my AOV is over $500? NoFraud (per-order pricing wins).
…I sell into 10+ countries? Signifyd or Riskified (global data).
…I’m already in a Shopify hold? None of these fix it. You need direct escalation. Apply at ban-lift-

Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify Protect work with Klarna, PayPal, or other gateways?
No. Shopify Protect only covers orders processed through Shopify Payments. Klarna disputes, PayPal disputes,
and any third-party gateway disputes are not eligible. If you run multi-gateway, you need a separate tool like
Signifyd or NoFraud to cover non-Shopify-Payments volume.
How fast does Signifyd or NoFraud actually decide?
Sub-second on both. The integration sits between the customer’s “Place order” click and the payment
authorization step. Decisions return in 100-400ms typically. The customer never sees a delay.
Will running a fraud app affect my Shopify Payments standing?
Indirectly, yes — in a good way. A lower chargeback rate keeps you below Shopify’s 1.0% hard suspension
threshold and Visa’s 0.65% Early Warning threshold. The app itself isn’t visible to Shopify Risk Ops, but the
chargeback rate it drives definitely is.
Can I switch fraud apps without losing protection?
Yes, but plan a 7-14 day overlap. Run both in parallel, compare decisions, then cut over. Sudden switches with
zero overlap have caused merchants to take chargeback hits during the gap.
What about Kount, Forter, or Sift?
Kount and Forter are enterprise-tier (Riskified competitors). Sift is mid-market (Signifyd competitor) but
stronger on account-takeover use cases than checkout fraud. We focused this review on the five most common
picks in the Shopify ecosystem. The shortlist logic still applies — guaranteed > scoring, mid-market starts at
$1M.
Will these tools prevent a Shopify Payments hold?
They help by lowering your chargeback rate, which is the most common trigger. But holds are also triggered by
volume spikes, product category, dropshipping signals, and customer complaint patterns — none of which a
fraud app addresses. Treat fraud prevention as one lever among several.
