Chargeback Rates by Shopify Industry: 2026 Data TL;DR: Based on Unholdr’s internal data from 200+ merchants we’ve worked with, the average chargeback rate at the point of Shopify intervention is 0.84%, well above the Visa Early Warning Program threshold (0.65%) and approaching the Shopify hard suspension threshold (1.0%). Dropshipping verticals run 2–3x higher than own-brand peers in the same category.
Chargeback rate is the single most predictive variable for Shopify Payments holds, reserves, and suspensions.
Shopify’s documented hard suspension threshold is 1.0%, Visa’s Dispute Monitoring Program (VDMP) triggers
at 0.9%, and the Early Warning Program (EWP) triggers at 0.65%. Knowing where your industry sits relative to
these thresholds is the difference between operating sustainably and watching your account get reviewed.
This article aggregates operator-estimate chargeback rates from our caseload, broken down by category,
business model (own-brand vs dropshipping), and AOV band.

The gap between healthy (0.31%) and intervention-triggering (0.84%) is the operating band you need to live in.
Inside it, sustainable. Outside it, Shopify’s risk model has you.
Chargeback rate by industry — average vs intervention
These are operator estimates of the average chargeback rate across all Shopify merchants in each vertical,
paired with the average rate at which Shopify imposed a hold, reserve, or suspension on our caseload.
AVG RATE (ALL MERCHANTS, AVG RATE AT INTERVENTION
INDUSTRY
EST.) (UNHOLDR)
CBD / hemp 0.7% 1.1%
Supplements / nootropics 0.6% 1.0%
Vape / e-cig 0.65% 1.05%
Fashion dropshipping (AliExpress) 0.9% 1.2%
Fashion own-brand 0.35% 0.7%
High-ticket electronics 0.55% 0.95%
Beauty / cosmetics 0.45% 0.85%
Pet products 0.4% 0.75%
Apparel (own-brand) 0.3% 0.6%
Home goods 0.3% 0.6%
Digital products / SaaS 0.5% 0.85%
Fashion dropshipping is the only vertical where the average rate exceeds the Visa EWP threshold. That’s why
dropshipping accounts dominate the inbound caseload: a typical AliExpress-fulfilled fashion store is operating
above the warning line at baseline, with no margin for a bad month.
Own-brand vs dropshipping — within the same category
For categories where we have enough sample to split, the dropshipping multiplier is consistent.
CATEGORY OWN-BRAND AVG DROPSHIPPING AVG MULTIPLIER
Fashion 0.35% 0.9% 2.6x
Beauty 0.4% 0.95% 2.4x
Home goods 0.3% 0.7% 2.3x
Pet products 0.35% 0.75% 2.1x
Electronics 0.5% 1.1% 2.2x
The dropshipping multiplier averages ~2.3x. Three drivers:
1. Long fulfillment times generate “item not received” chargebacks at higher base rates.
2. Product/photo discrepancy (AliExpress product photos vs received item) drives “not as described”
disputes.
3. No native customer service infrastructure means more buyers go directly to their card issuer instead of
contacting the store first.
Chargeback rate by AOV band
Average order value matters because high-AOV chargebacks attract more issuer scrutiny and trigger faster
Shopify review.
AOV BAND AVG CHARGEBACK RATE (EST.) NOTES
Under $25 0.6% Higher rate, lower absolute losses
$25–75 0.45% Sweet spot for own-brand
$75–150 0.5% Mid-tier electronics, beauty
$150–300 0.65% High-ticket fashion, electronics
$300–500 0.8% Watch threshold
Above $500 1.0% Single bad order can breach
The under-$25 band has higher rates because impulse purchases convert into “I didn’t recognize this charge”
disputes at higher rates. The above-$500 band breaches the Shopify threshold because a single chargeback on
100 orders is exactly 1.0%.
Trigger frequency for chargebacks (Unholdr case forensics)
Across our caseload, the breakdown of chargeback reason codes we see:
CHARGEBACK REASON % OF CHARGEBACKS OBSERVED
Item not received (INR) 38%
Not as described / quality 24%
Fraud / unauthorized 22%
Friendly fraud (recognized purchase) 11%
Duplicate / processing error 5%
INR dominates because of the dropshipping mix in our caseload. For merchants on faster fulfillment models
(own-brand, US warehouse), fraud/unauthorized typically jumps to first position.

Methodology
Data source. Aggregated from Unholdr’s internal case management system covering ~200 paid engagements
between Q1 2024 and Q1 2026.
Sampling caveat. Our “rate at intervention” numbers are accurate for merchants who landed in our caseload.
The “average rate” numbers across all merchants are operator estimates calibrated against publicly available
industry benchmarks (Chargebacks911, Verifi, Visa Annual Reports). Treat them as practitioner estimates, not
peer-reviewed research.
Chargeback rate definition. Unless otherwise stated, “chargeback rate” means chargebacks as a percentage of
card transaction count, measured on a 30-day rolling basis — the same methodology Visa and Shopify use.
Reason code source. Reason codes come from merchant-supplied chargeback dashboard exports (Shopify
Payments dashboard, where Visa/Mastercard reason codes are displayed).
Frequently asked questions
What chargeback rate triggers a Shopify hold?
Shopify’s documented hard suspension threshold is 1.0%. In practice, our caseload shows the median
intervention point (first hold or reserve) is around 0.84%. The Visa Early Warning Program triggers at 0.65%,
which is also the point where most Shopify Payments accounts start seeing increased review.
What’s a “safe” chargeback rate?
Operator estimate: below 0.5% gives you margin to absorb a bad month. Below 0.3% is the band where
Shopify’s risk algorithm tends to ignore you. Anything above 0.65% (Visa EWP) puts you in active monitoring.
How is chargeback rate calculated?
Chargeback count divided by transaction count, expressed as a percentage, measured on a 30-day rolling
window. Both Visa and Shopify use this methodology. Some processors use a 90-day window or chargeback-
amount-divided-by-volume — confirm which window your processor uses.
Why is dropshipping always higher?
Three structural drivers: long fulfillment times generate INR disputes, photo/product discrepancy generates
“not as described” disputes, and absence of native customer service routes buyers straight to chargeback as
first contact. The 2.3x multiplier is consistent across categories in our data.
