Average Shopify Reserve Percentage by Category: 2026 Data TL;DR: Based on Unholdr’s internal data from 200+ merchants we’ve worked with, the weighted average Shopify Payments rolling reserve across our caseload is 22%, with CBD and supplements clustering at 25–30% and lower-risk verticals like pet and apparel sitting at 10–15%. Reserve percentages above 30% are rare and typically a stepping-stone toward suspension.
A Shopify Payments rolling reserve is a percentage of incoming card volume held by Shopify for 120 days.
Unlike a full hold (which freezes 100% of payouts), a reserve lets some of your cash flow through while Shopify
carries a buffer against chargeback risk. The reserve percentage Shopify chooses is correlated with category risk
and your account history.
This article aggregates operator-estimate reserve percentages from our caseload, broken down by category,
account age, and chargeback rate band.

The 22% weighted average is biased upward because our caseload is dominated by merchants who got a
reserve harsh enough to seek help. A representative average across all Shopify Payments merchants with any
reserve would likely be lower — operator estimate, around 15–18%.
Reserve % by industry
MOST COMMON
INDUSTRY RANGE OBSERVED PRACTICAL CEILING
RESERVE %
CBD / hemp 30% 20–30% 30% (then suspension)
Supplements / nootropics 25% 15–30% 30%
Vape / e-cig 25% 20–30% 30%
Fashion dropshipping 20% 15–25% 25%
High-ticket electronics 20% 10–25% 25%
Beauty / cosmetics 15% 10–20% 25%
Pet products 10% 10–15% 20%
Apparel (own brand) 10% 10–15% 20%
Home goods 10% 10–15% 20%
Digital products / SaaS 10% 10–20% 25%
The “practical ceiling” column is what we’ve observed as the highest reserve percentage typically applied in that
vertical before Shopify escalates to a full hold or suspension. A merchant pushed past the practical ceiling
rarely stays at that reserve level for more than a few weeks.
Reserve % by chargeback rate
The single most predictive variable for reserve percentage is the merchant’s chargeback rate at the time of
imposition.
CHARGEBACK RATE MOST COMMON RESERVE % NOTES
Below 0.5% No reserve typical Below VISA EWP threshold
0.5–0.65% 10–15% Warning band
0.65–0.9% 15–20% Above Visa EWP, below VDMP
0.9–1.0% 20–25% VDMP territory
Above 1.0% 25–30% or full hold Shopify hard suspension threshold
The 0.65% (Visa EWP) and 1.0% (Shopify hard suspension) bands are explicit. The Visa Dispute Monitoring
Program (VDMP) triggers at 0.9% — see Visa Early Warning Program Explained for more.
Reserve % by account age
Newer accounts get higher reserve percentages for the same risk profile. Shopify weights account history as a
proxy for predictability.
ACCOUNT AGE AT RESERVE IMPOSITION MOST COMMON RESERVE %
Under 90 days 25%
3–6 months 20%
6–12 months 15%
1–2 years 15%
2+ years 10%
A merchant with a 0.7% chargeback rate and a 90-day-old store will typically see a 25% reserve. The same
merchant with a 3-year-old store and the same chargeback rate often sees 15%. Account age does not erase
risk, but it dampens the multiplier.
How reserves change over time (without intervention)
Tracking reserve trajectories across our caseload — for merchants who did not engage Unholdr or pursue legal
action — we see the following 6-month pattern:
6-MONTH OUTCOME % OF RESERVED MERCHANTS
Reserve % decreased ~12%
Reserve % stayed the same ~58%
Reserve % increased ~14%
Escalated to full hold ~10%
Escalated to suspension ~6%
The takeaway: once a reserve is set, the default outcome is “no change.” Shopify’s risk team does not
proactively review reserves downward. Merchants who saw a decrease typically achieved it through
documented chargeback reduction sustained over 60+ days and a written request through the Merchant Trust
team.

Methodology
Data source. Aggregated from Unholdr’s internal case management system covering ~200 paid engagements
between Q1 2024 and Q1 2026. Reserve-specific cases (as distinct from full holds) represent roughly 35% of the
caseload.
Sampling caveat. Our reserve % numbers are biased upward because merchants with mild reserves (10–15%)
rarely engage external help. The true Shopify-wide average reserve percentage for all merchants with any
reserve is likely lower than our 22% caseload-weighted average. Treat the numbers as operator estimates, not
peer-reviewed research.
Reserve % source. Reserve percentages come directly from Shopify’s merchant-facing notification email and
the merchant’s Payouts dashboard, both of which display the rolling reserve rate as a percentage.
Chargeback rate source. Chargeback rates come from the merchant’s Shopify Payments dashboard at the
date the reserve was imposed (we collect this during onboarding).
Frequently asked questions
What’s a “normal” Shopify reserve percentage?
There isn’t a single “normal” — it depends on category, chargeback rate, and account age. Across our caseload,
20% is the most common single value, and 10–30% is the typical range. CBD and supplements cluster higher;
pet, apparel, and home goods cluster lower.
Does Shopify publish reserve statistics?
No. Shopify discloses that reserves exist and that they are calculated based on “account risk,” but does not
publish reserve rate distributions. All numbers in this article are operator estimates from Unholdr’s caseload.
Can a reserve be negotiated down?
Yes, but rarely without intervention. Approximately 12% of reserved merchants in our dataset saw a reduction
within 6 months by sustaining a chargeback rate below 0.65% for 60+ days and submitting a written request
through the Merchant Trust team. Direct escalation through Unholdr typically achieves reduction faster.
What happens if my reserve % keeps increasing?
In our data, ~14% of merchants saw their reserve % increase over 6 months, and ~16% escalated to a full hold
or suspension. Reserve increases are a leading indicator — if you’re seeing them, address the underlying
chargeback or return-rate issue before the next step.
